I had a DnD character in college (in the frigging 70s!) called Riff-Raff the Riddlemaster (or Riff-Raff the Ragmalian by his detractors). He was a very powerful magic user pretending to be an Illusionist pretending to be a Bard. He was bluffing everybody especially as his persona of the Gray Guardian whom even gods respected (a very long story). Had he died I would have been very sad for a while before I wanted to create a new character.
And this was with AD and D, I believe first edition.
I didn't think I could remember so much about him! Of all my characters I never thought he'd be the one I missed playing the most.
