Car creation in the new edition is as simple as "You have X points to spend, here's a deck of cards to pick from"; each card has an associated cost, place it around the central 'dashboard' to denote where it is on the car, and it's off to the races.
I don't expect the younger child to really understand the synergies between various cards, but they also won't need to in order to just have fun smashing cars into one another...that kind of thing is really only needed when playing competitively.
