In play cards must be face-up. The rules say this: "In Play: These are the cards on the table in front of you, showing your Race and Class (if any) and the Items you are carrying." The word "showing" is pretty telling that these cards must be face-up so that everyone can see them whenever they want. Any cards that you have on the table and are face-down should be considered part of your hand, which has a size limit.

One important things about the rules: They tell you what you can do. They are not responsible for telling you everything that you can't do. If they did the latter, you wouldn't be able to carry them. In other words, if the rules don't tell you that you can do it, and they don't tell you can't, you still can't.
