Interesting Times and
The Last Hero is a somewhat more developed character. (
Last Hero is a bit of a small gem, but definitely a special case.)

In which I mean further books in the series weren't so very anvilicious. And keep in mind Thud! wasn't the first overly moralistically preachy novel... Monstrous Regiment had a lot of moments where you could tell Pterry was throwing up his hands and shouting "But it's [CURRENT YEAR] why aren't we past this yet?!?!?!"

Well, I'm not sure that
Raising Steam is entirely serene... and
Monstrous Regiment is a war story; one rather expects those to feature a little horror at human failings.
But we digress.
