Still, I think I have a small case here since the rule about treasure seems to conflict with the rule about combat. The combat rules feel more important, yet I still think there is a contradiction because of the Voodoo-Zombies ability.

The official answer is that you can not play new Items during combat, since that is what the rules say, so people joining your side would not change the rules...
