My pet theory is that it wasn't lost, it was just hidden wherever the cat hides things. We moved a sideboard at my mothers place and found a good fifty-odd wine corks, a heap of rubber bands, the odd ball of tinfoil, and other 'treasures' underneath it.
The cat was thrilled.
