Honestly, you can play full roleplaying games with Melee and Wizard, provided you don't mind creating a couple pages of house rules to cover all the stuff that comes up (and it doesn't bother you to be playing differently from everyone else). In this sense, Melee/Wizard is the OD+D of TFT. The reason to dig deeper in the commercial products isn't that you can't play with just the pocket box; it's because they are excellent and you will enjoy them.
