New Hong Kong was opened to trade in the aftermath of the yellow expedition incident. The yellow expedition was the largest, most far-flung, and most expensive of a series of semi-military actions by the Spinward Trade Alliance aimed at forcing trade treaties with reluctant but lucrative targets. The resulting military maneuvers did not end in shooting, but were very expensive for both the Forty Fourth Republic and the Trade Alliance. Both sides were shocked at the might the other could bring to bear, and the establishment of New Hong Kong was seen as a cheap compromise.
