Attaching Biblical punishments to critical failures instead of direct responses to specific transgressions is going to make the deity seem random, capricious, petulant, or insane and possibly all of the above. The thing that you are describing sounds more like a mad demiurge that has taken over in the absence (death?) of an actual god.

If you want to continue your quest for historical fantasy gaming and wedge in the Abrahamic faiths, you might want to draw inspiration from the Green Ronin supplement "Testament," Ars Magica's "Realm of the Divine", or the recent "Lion & Dragon" from DOM Publishing.
