Part of my reasoning for the visuals was the times when the AI routes one 3/1 through another forward 3/1, and they get out of the way, then reform in a triad. Then the previously forward unit moves through the new forward unit, and it repeats. Leap-frogging each other seems way more visually cool.

There's also the fact that a hex, at 1500 meters, is getting literally walked across in about a half dozen steps.
