Id go with the Swedish flavored Dr Kromm on this one.
I a PC of mine carried a bog standard fine broadsword for 5-8 yrs IRL spanning 10-12 yrs (GM and I moved a bit) and 50 odd yrs of the PCs life.
He passed on numerous chances to replace/upgrade (he had once asked "God" to pick him a "good" one. Having thought on it some once you have done that as a priest how do you justify trading it out?
When the "perks" came out I bought both Weapon Bond and Sig Gear for it (no cash value to me an amount of "plot protection").
Was using it in combat once and someone parried my attack, with a monofiliment garrote (no he doesnt know the terms but the effects...). The point and about 6 inches got lopped off.
He had been to "Hell" a couple of times, different ones, he had visited the cesspools of the world, he had nearly died a number of times.
He was only depressed/discouraged twice.
The Day they Broke Upuaut's (GOD) Sword.

But he kept the pieces. I was trying to figure out what ther #@%% I was going to do when one of the other PC's swiped the sword and took it to a Dwaven Master Sword Smith and had it reforged. GM said "you cant tell the difference."
Party Lost some cash (GM happy). I was bummed (in Cha/out Cha) for a couple o weeks. An Imaginative PC got a bonus CP (PC other than me happy).
Hell that should be the type of sword that outlives the PC. When he dies; a friend, a son, a lover will pick it up and carry it forward; or will tear the earth apart looking for the killer who stole it....
