Answer 89 - 5310 BER
On the Bay of Ealhwic, located in Ġetwysan, there is an ancient underground temple, the Ealhwic Hypogeum, with its large hillside gateway facing due eastward across the bay. On the summer solstice, the rising sun shines directly between the heads of the bay, down the temple's gated hallway, illuminating its inner sanctum.
For generations, the attendant priesthood marked the walls of the temple with the passing of each year. When their cult passed, the local citizenry took on the same task, and eventually the local kings elevated the temple's year-keeping to a point of national pride. When early Enlightenment scholars wished to establish a universal calendar, they settled on the Ealhwic Hypogeum as having the oldest continuous written record. Thus, they called that year "3484, By the Ealhwic Reckoning."
This epoch is globally accepted now in the Calendar Year 5310 BER, although many regions and countries still follow their own calendars to varying degrees.
