Rapiers, used 1 handed, did hit 5' and beyond.
Some of the greatswords hit over 6' overall, with about 18" to 24" of hilt, and another similar of false hilt past the quillons. They CAN be wielded 1-handed, by exceptional individuals.
I've seen the late Sir Kyslon, KSCA, wield a 5' 6" overall rattan sword 1-handed. It actually is heavier than a 6' steel blade... And it was not weak hits. Rung my bell quite loudly. He was over 6', and well muscled.
So it isn't "ridiculous" - suboptimal, yes, but ridiculous? no.
