I'm pretty sure it says in the rules that steeds and hirelings you can have only 1 unless you have a card that lets you have more. I think you can't put down either as carried but not used, but not too sure about that.
Ship enhancers I would assume would be the same, but I haven't played any game with ships for a while so can't remember too well.
On-topic: If you need to prove it to someone, for now you just need to show them Andrews post and it should be perfectly valid proof that items are cards with a value.
