Was it the suns cattle or the suns horses that ate men? I can't remember. Regardless, I think that's good enough precedent to have these be the cattle of a major figure, and hand the PCs a quest to rustle up some death cattle without harming them :)
Cross with Aurochs for something terrifying 3000+ pound foul tempered beasts.
