A one-party system that actually allows wide membership and internal contests is basically just another grade of citizenship - not much different than limiting the franchise to guild members, property owners, or the properly baptized.

In a multi-party state, if the party excludes you from itself, you ask to become a member of a different party, or make your own. In a single-party state, if you're excluded by The party, you're excluded from politics and there's nothing you can do about it, no matter how many people want to vote for you or how much money you have.
