This has to do with the "human-centric" nature of In Nomine that we were discussing in the thread. All of this is important because human perception and belief can strengthen or weaken Heaven and Hell if it reaches a critical mass.

Point by point:

* The Secretary of Defense can encourage or discourage policies that may support or weaken a particular Word. On top of that, his arrival in a smaller town means that a lot of eyes are turned that way ... eyes that can be encouraged to see and remember certain things.

* Veteran's Day is important because 1) It's a symbol, and symbols have power if humans allow them to; 2) This particular town is the birthplace of it, giving it extra resonance (pardon the phrase); 3) Again, it's a coincidence of time and place that will have people paying extra attention -- or, if you prefer, a time when people will be distracted so you can pull off another plan somewhere else.

* This isn't Kansas City, it's Emporia, which is a city in Kansas. KC is about two hours drive to the east. And as far as the War is concerned, it's usually a backwater. Which means that every side has to scramble to get troops on the ground when something significant threatens to happen there ... and that the relative handful of "local" celestials (like the PCs) take on greater importance, because of their local edge.

* Why so many Tethers? Actually, compared to some GM's cities, this is a pretty small number. Tethers tend to grow where human minds focus on an idea or a concept strongly. So a Dolly Madison plant might become a Tether to Gluttony, a major university library might become a Tether to Destiny, a place remembered as the site of a significant tragedy may still resonate to the tune of Death or Nightmares.
