You basically have to make a Quick Contest of Path skills, success lets you punch through and reduces the Power by 1. I see nothing wrong with adding an "after effect" to the spell that reduces the Power by a further amount (use Bestows a Penalty)
if you are successful in getting through the ward. Your spell is ripping the ward to shreds like a barbed arrow being pulled out of a wound.
It's unofficial now, but I personally allow Bestows a Penalty to penalize the initial roll to resist with HT or Will. It's a spell that's hitting harder than normal. I've used Lesser Strengthen Magic in the past for this, but I think Greater Strengthen Magic may be the better way.
