As I recall, many moons ago from talking to the guy at GHQ (we used to chat at times at train conventions, since one of our employees* had interned at his shop), he stated he went with 1:285 as a scale since no one else had used it before, and it marked his models as being just slightly different.
1:285 doesn't directly convert to 6mm generic scale, or 1mm per foot, or what have you, it is a round number though.
And this year is GHQ's 50th anniversary ...
* Said employee was never allowed to see the mastering or mold making processes, that was done elsewhere. I always figured the master pattern process involved magic, based on the incredible level of detail GHQ can put on their castings.
