I think it comes down to a philosophical question of whether or not the players should know all the rules.
It's more convenient for the GM if they don't. I remember answering lots of questions with "You don't know." It led to some interesting superstitions, and occasionally they would try to prove/disprove a pet theory. Then I'd point out their underlying assumption that the universe was consistent. ;)
Now when they asked questions that their characters should know, such as how far they can throw a rock, or what kind of chance would they have to lasso a skeleton, I'd give them an estimate (hard, easy, etc.) and if they committed to it I'd tell them the roll (such as 4d-2 vs DX). But I wasn't going to make everyone sit there while they did math.
