You answered this question just fine with regard to the Wandering Monster. However, what I *wanted* to ask as the second part of the question was this: If someone uses "Death" on a monster - thereby defeating it - is it too late at that point or not to use "Dead Broke" on that same monster?

Since cards are resolved as they are played, I don't think there is an opportunity to play
Dead Broke. Once a Monster is Defeated the only options that I can think of are
Annihilation or
Wandering Monster cards being played.
