A windshell works almost as well, has other benefits, and frees up a space. But your point that cycles need side protection is absolutely true.

You'll have at least one ram plate in virtually every arena, it's true. I don't know whether that says something about the power of the ram plate or the psychology of particular players, though. Before 5e, I never saw them dominate, even with doubled/halved damage.
