A basic problem here is that spaceship combat in a relatively realistic environment is fundamentally not very interesting, because there isn't much in the way of terrain in space, and maneuvering doesn't tend to be relevant. Absent that, you've basically got a slugging match and "who can deplete the other guy's HP faster" just isn't all that interesting.
