Three times:

1) When you Kick Down the Door at the start of your turn, you draw a face-up Door card.
2) When you have help in a combat and defeat the monster(s), you draw face-up Treasure cards.
3) When a specific card or rule tells you to draw face up.

Quick refresher: Items are cards with a printed Gold Piece value (including the printed phrase "No Value"). Almost all of them are Treasures, but a few are from other decks.

Item cards may be played in front of you on the table. If it is a permanent Item (one that doesn't say "Usable once only" or "One-Shot") and it is legal for you to use at that moment, you may equip it, adding its bonuses and abilities to your character. Otherwise, you should turn the Item card sideways to show that it is being "carried"; you have the Item but gain no bonuses from it.

Did that help?
