It maybe too late to do this degree of a retcon but: Al Schroeder of Schroeder's Speculations had the idea that Hugo Danner and Clark Kent were the same person. Hugo fakes his death at the end of Gladiator and created Clark to rid himself of all the baggage Hugo had picked up. A twenty years older Kal-El would have time to have a child by any of the women mentioned in the novel before WWI. An immortal Kryptonian might still look young enough for him to associate with the Legion during this "missing decade" and to pass as a Superboy.
