That, in turn, tends to result in slow improvements in social status, which can lead to social and political change if it goes on long enough.
Since economics plays such a huge role in cultural, social and political change, it might be worth keeping in mind the role women and children would play in an AtE setting. The loss of technology and social order would impact their health, well-being and social status far, far more than it would for men.
If the campaign takes place soon after the apocalypse (however that happened) those losses would drive incredible frustration and could result in the sort of conflicts that make for great plots.
