Backstory:
Spoiler:
Jorrik's father Tristan Harris was a member of the Lunar Brotherhood, an order of knights charged with keeping the peace in his home country. The boy never knew his mother, who died giving birth to him, leaving him with something of a troubled childhood being raised by his aunt Welda while his father was away on errantry. While his father visited as often as possible, it was not often, which means the boy grew into both an idolization of his father and a somewhat rebellious streak. This meant that when his father offered him at the age of thirteen an opportunity to serve as a squire to another Knight of the Brotherhood, he leapt at the chance, seeing it both as a way to get out of the small village he was 'stuck' in with his aunt and a way to be more like his father.
This went well enough at first, though there were some rough patches. The Brotherhood taught him to wield a blade, and when he attained the Fifth Circle (the lowest rank) he was granted full Brotherhood and his father's sword, Main-Droit, his father having decided to retire from errantry the previous year due to a grievous leg-wound dealt by a worthy foe.
Things started to go sour when a coalition of barons in a nearby larger kingdom decided to declare war on his home country. The Brotherhood, along with the other knightly orders, naturally sallied forth to the defense of their king. However, Jorrik's ideas of battle differed somewhat from those of his compatriots. While he paid lip-service to the ideas of chivalry, that's all he really paid to them. Chief among his disagreements was his view on the proper disposition of vanquished enemy knights: the chivalric code called for their capture and ransom, but Jorrik saw that as a waste and harmful besides; he much preferred to make his foes dead so they could not rise to war again...with perhaps a little looting of the corpses to line his own pockets for his service.
It all came to a head when he downed one of the barons responsible for the aggression. While the man sued for mercy, instead of heeding his pleas, Jorrik plunged steel through his belly, in full view of his brother knights. After the battle he was confined, and after a period of debate amongst the leaders of the Brotherhood, stripped of his rank and title and sent into exile.
Jorrik was furious, but even such insults cool with time somewhat. He still vehemently disagrees with the decision, considering himself still a worthy knight, even if those he formerly admired cannot see the truth due to their hidebound ways. In his wanderings, he has taken it upon himself to prove himself to those former compatriots, which is why, when he heard of an old abandoned temple to a demon once again finding followers, he thought nothing of raising a few mercenaries to follow him in a sack of the evil place. However, he didn't expect the high priest to be a learned demonologist, so he was unprepared as the pit opened under him, smelling of brimstone and echoing with the screams of the damned.
