Also, for JPEG, there's still the decision how much compression you want. A 1 MB jpeg / 1 million pixel typically gives a very clean image. The smaller version is at 0.7 MB / 1 million pixels and I didn't notice any artefacts. Of course, that depends on the picture as well. Most programs (Photoshop, Gimp, ...) have a way to preview the compressed JPEG and zoom into specific areas to check the quality.
