You write that If the snake were sitting out in the open, it might be worth a +2 modifier. I'm not sure why this wouldn't fall under the Basic Set rule that something that is in plain sight has a +10 modifier. I can see that that wouldn't be as helpful for the example, but on the other hand I'm not sure the chance of missing the snake should be that high, either.
