A lot of the cost issues depend heavily on whether you are willing to go 3rd party for the toner or not. I bought a Xerox Phaser 6500[1] with Christmas money this year, and the difference between "genuine" Xerox and good 3rd party is about 5x in price. When deciding on a color laser printer one of the deciding factors was the price of 3rd party toner.
