I had the Phrenological Adjuster (gear item) and Gear Shift (Play any time to turn a gear monster or item into a non-gear one or vice-versa. Usable Only Once) was played by another player on my item. I argued that because of the "Usable Only Once" wording that the Gear Shift is temporary.

Is this correct or is the Gear Shift a permanent effect?

It was played because I had the Mechanic class card giving me an additional +1 on the item.
