Default Re: Catalog of the Weird Parallels

Hectocrats: A standing council of 100 leaders rules the world. Each seat is appointed in a different way: one is elected by the Cardinals of the Catholic Church (separate from the pope); one seat is openly purchased by outbidding the previous incumbent; one is won in a chess tournament. Four are heriditary, but each is inherited according to different rules.

The council is at least 2200 years old, and it changes in response to the times. In the current year 2001, there is consideration that the Chair appointed to the owner of the worlds' fastest horse will instead become someone appointed by internet poll. How, let alone why, the council was created is unclear, as is how much inertia this worldline even has.

Bibliocrat: Libraries are the centers of political power in this world. Lawmaking and war are of lesser importance than well-ordered and accessible knowledge, but occasionally those studies are useful to the ends of preserving and protecting texts.

Geocracy: While political structures here vary as they do on our world, political borders are exclusively defined by natural geological divisions, such as soil type or bedrock regions.

Phagocracy: Rulership, in all realms and regardless of other methods of succession, is universally inhered by those that consume the previous ruler.

Ripartocracy: Although political stuctures are homeline-like, civilization is only possible within sight of a river; beyond that, humans slowly gain Beastial due to a divine curse.

Scribocracy: In this TL6+2 world, only the rulers may learn how to read and write. It only works because the infrestructure is highly automated, and what can't be automated is broken into many simple jobs and communicated by pictographic indicators. This suggests to Infinity that this worldline was quite advanced before the ban went into effect, but when and why that happened is not clear.

Xenocracy: Humans have proven to inhuman rulers, according to major schools of thought on this world. When a ship bearing a few dozen immortal, brilliant aliens arrived after the devastation of the Last War, humans were eager to follow them. No native humans know this is a low-mana world. Current date 2023.
