Selenean Gendarmerie (Defunct)

Apart from the equivalent of Police Explorers and Junior ROTC, some of whom survived, the Selenean Gendarmerie were wiped out by the Cythereans in the war. Prior to their destruction, the Gendarmerie served as both a national police and emergency response force, and a self-defense force, for the Selenean cities as a confederation.

Ranks

Rank insignia were shown by small bucklers, usually worn on the right wrist, rather than held in the hand. The wooden bucklers used by higher ranks are varnished.

The given ranks are approximate translations from the Selenean language. The Investigative Branch had a few unique ranks for their officers, but usually did not have a separate chain of command above Sub-Prefect of Investigation. Their bucklers were marked with red enamel.

The Rank advantage level above each rank or set of ranks is also approximate. See also The Arithmetic of Rank and Variant Numbers of Ranks, GURPS Social Engineering p14. Someone with fewer subordinates than their rank suggests should have the Rank advantage level appropriate to the number of personnel under them, and enough levels of Courtesy Rank to match the in-character rank they have (e.g, a Lieutenant Major with only a dozen subordinates would have a Rank advantage of 2, and one level of Courtesy Rank).

Most branches/Investigative Branch

Rank 8:
OF-9 Commissioner (Prefect's buckler with three chevrons in a gold ring)

Rank 7:
OF-8 Deputy Commissioner (Prefect's buckler with three chevrons)
OF-7 Sector Commandant (Prefect's buckler with two chevrons)

Rank 6:
OF-6 Senior Prefect (Prefect's buckler with one chevron)
OF-5 Prefect (rectangular wooden buckler)

Rank 5:
OF-4 Sub-Prefect/Sub-Prefect of Investigation (elongated oval, polished bronze buckler)

Rank 4:
OF-3 Major/Chief Investigator (Lieutenant/Investigator's buckler with unpolished rim and centre)

Rank 3:
OF-2 Lieutenant Major/Senior Investigator (Lieutenant/Investigator's buckler with unpolished rim)
OF-1 Lieutenant/Investigator (oval, polished bronze buckler)
OF(D) Cadet Acting-as-Officer/Cadet Acting-as-Detective (oval, unpolished bronze buckler)
OR-6 Warrant Officer/Investigating Warrant Officer (oval, polished aluminum buckler)

Rank 2:
OR-5 Corporal Brigadier (Corporal's buckler with unpolished rim)
OR-4 Corporal (round, polished aluminum buckler)
OR-3 Gendarme First Class (Gendarme's buckler with polished rim)

Rank 1:
OR-2 Gendarme (round, unpolished aluminum buckler)

Rank 0:
OR-1 Acting Gendarme (no insignia)

Some of the modern Selenean city-states maintain as close as they can get to the old Gendarmerie, but most have developed their own services - sometimes three or more per city, with functions divided between them (e.g. police, fire & other emergencies, and defence) - often with unique rank schemes.

Uniforms

For work in vacuum, precisely form-fitting suits in gold and silver were preferred, with variably-reflective bubble-helms, and various sizes of life-support pack.

Normal working uniforms or dress uniforms were likewise gold and silver, but covered rather less skin than modern Westerners would be geared to expect from police or military personnel. Anime fans would be likely to compare the female uniforms (still used in some city-states) to WWWA 'battle bikinis' (example below, of two cosplayers from Infopunk Earth):
