IMO (and NOT giving the 100% official answer), cards with two "states" (Steed/Hireling or Headgear/Footgear) can have appropriate enhancers played on them that match either state, but can only claim the bonuses from those matching the *current* state of the card. This contradicts the prior ruling, which is why I'm hedging my bets, but I think it dodges most of the problems while adding only a minor matter of bookkeeping.
