Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Guilt Complex

Never used it. Considering that Bad Stuff happening to one's Dependents, in particular, is to some extent what they're for, to get threatened/captured/attacked/etc. and need rescuing, it seems...

Re: Fencing Game Preferences

In combat time (particularly if it's GURPS) they're basically one-shot weapons, and they're heavy. It makes it harder for the skilled swordsman to hold off a mob of guards, but it doesn't yet render...

Re: Public Announcement

You can't, because I am well aware that this is SJGames' property (even if it is assembled entirely from pages they've given away free). Once I can put together the full version (1-122), I'll seek...

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Greed

This seems like a fairly extreme version of the disad, but I think I'd be inclined to say "Greedy doesn't have to mean Stupid".

Consider for example how many "amazing investment opportunities" one...

Re: Public Announcement

I will ask once the final issue is out and I can put the thing together.

It may be that (consisting as it will of 122 pages all numbered "2") it doesn't meet SJGames' standards for publication,...

Re: Public Announcement

I will be happy, in an entirely non-official capacity, to convert and expand my index thread (or just the contents page of each issue, which would be utterly trivial, so trivial in fact that I've...

Re: Halloween and Other disgraceful Holidays; Memetic Seasonal Warfare.

As far as political context goes, "there was a man who tried to blow up Parliament" seems to be about usual the level of sophistication. It's the night when fireworks happen, more than at the New...

Re: Triplanetary: Launching from a planet

The core problem here is that there has been an explicit change of text from 2nd to 3rd edition. In 3rd, we have:

In 2nd (1981), we have:

Clearly, "or otherwise maneuver as desired" has...

Re: Hidden Realms

This is Really Difficult. The thermal signature needed for biolife is substantial, considering the sensitivity of TS sensor tech. You could steal David Brin's idea of cooling lasers, I suppose.

Re: Original publishing of Assault Rifles question + more .

Would have been valid in 2016 though. :)

Also in 2044.

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: G-Intolerance

It's more mechanically fiddly than many disadvantages. But I think another problem may be that it doesn't provide fun stuff - compare, say, Lecherousness, Compulsive Carousing, Social Stigma,...

Re: Pyramid #3/120: Alternate GURPS V

Some years ago I designed a system that did something like this, in a matrix: speed, power, accuracy and endurance, for each of physical, mental and social (and, in campaigns that would use it,...

Re: [Basic] Throwing things with TK

The numbers usually quoted are ~75% detonation chance with the original 425 impact fuse (some say "75% failure rate" but I think this is probably a transcription error), ~90% with the 426 graze fuse....

Re: [Basic] Throwing things with TK

The cocking effort isn't all the force that goes into launching the projectile - there's both the spring and a powder charge, and firing the weapon recocks the spring. (Usually.)

I haven't been...

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Frightens Animals

Mechanically I see this as Generic Reaction Penalty -4, Animals Only (-50%). It's so specific that it feels like cruft from previous editions.

I could see adding this to a template for certain...

Re: Drama, dice-rolls and Plot

My wife told me a method for making decisions: flip a coin. If you say "oh, well best of three…" you know what your preference was.

I use random generation similarly; I make a roll, look at the...

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Fragile

Heh. Something rather like that applied to the Volkszauberer that my Weird War II PCs were shooting at in Saturday's session. (Well, they were using magic-disrupting bullets.)

They're not sure yet...

Re: Drama, dice-rolls and Plot

I think there's a range of this that falls within "most players will enjoy it". Some players like more direction (e.g. "your mission this week is…" games); others prefer to come up with their own...

Re: Exotic Governmental/Legal Systems

Seems as though the "parties" here would be factions within the single party.

Re: How has the world builder's handbook held up?

For coverage of the same sort of material in GURPS 4e, look at GURPS Spaceships 5 - Exploration and Colony Spacecraft.

Re: Conversation Rate of G$ To Real World Dollars

Yes; it was invented in 1972 for the ISO 646 extensions to ASCII. That said, since it explicitly means "a currency of some sort" as opposed to "one specific currency", I don't think it's appropriate...

On the other hand, look at the way UFOs and Bigfoot – and other legends where "I didn't have a camera with me" was a key part of the story – have practically vanished since near-universal cellphone...

Re: Triplanetary: Launching from a planet

For clarity: this does allow for overloading on turn N+1.

Re: Triplanetary: Launching from a planet

This is not an official answer.

The way I've chosen to interpret it, in light of the second edition rules which I also have, is thus. (Assuming strong gravity.)

On turn N you launch from...
