Re: DIY Nuclear Reactors After the End

Again, Oak Ridge in 1945 produced 60 kg of highly enriched uranium in 3 months with access to a 250 MW reactor and a much less efficient process. GW of power is not required even with the diffusion...

Re: DIY Nuclear Reactors After the End

You need thousands of centrifuges to produce hundreds of kilograms of highly enriched uranium in a year. But since the goal is much more modest, you can presumably get by with less.

Gas...

Re: DIY Nuclear Reactors After the End

I'm not suggesting that a community build a K-25 equivalent from scratch. I am suggesting it might be feasible to scavenge a few dozen or hundred centrifuges from the surrounding areas and use those...

Re: DIY Nuclear Reactors After the End

It also excuses any eccentricities of the PCs: whatever their flaws, they're the ones volunteering to go dig spent fuel rods out of fallout contaminated spent storage sites. The community has to put...

Re: DIY Nuclear Reactors After the End

It uses low enriched uranium zirconium hydride as a fuel. Zirconium hydride looks like a relatively safe material to create (expose zirconium to hydrogen gas at medium-high temperatures) but I'm not...

Re: DIY Nuclear Reactors After the End

The Reed Research Reactor (RRR) is a 250 kW pool type reactor operated by less than 50 people with less than 3 years training and experience, because it's the nuclear reactor at Reed College in...

Re: [RoS/IW] Best AI ally?

That's the small nightmare option.

The medium nightmare option is that Zone London has been partially subverted by the Ancient Dead, and the original processing cores have shut off most external...

Re: [RoS/IW] Best AI ally?

Sure, but anyone who can attack the Central Library can probably attack a backup stored with Luna: if they can dimension hop to and from the Library's pocket dimension, they can likely dimension to...

Re: [RoS/IW]Best AI ally?

Robocabal already has the Central Library in a hard vacuum pocket dimension. Presumably anybody who can crack that can handle the lunar surface and Zonemind Luna's minimal resources. That's what I...

Re: [RoS/IW]Best AI ally?

Brisbane would be first on my list. Brisbane is all about the weird science, and technomagic is weird science.

I don't see what Paris has to offer, except maybe as a friendly contact to other...

Re: [AtE] Black Powder vs Smokeless

I don't get that. Mercury fulminate was first synthesized in 1800 and it doesn't seem like a complicated process: dissolve mercury in nitric acid, then carefully add ethanol and let the results dry....

Re: [AtE] Black Powder vs Smokeless

The chemistry for primers is fairly well known. It doesn't seem to be that hard to make mostly stable primers if you don't have an all-weather spec, don't demand a stable 20+ shelf life, and don't...

Re: [AtE] Black Powder vs Smokeless

The Krag-Jorgensen was a smokeless powder rifle adopted by the US Army in 1894, with initial bids 1892. Poudre B was developed in 1884 as the first successful rifle powder and every country started...

Re: Age of Sail research material

Those numbers seem pretty large. An Elizabeth class 74-gun ship had 28x 32 pounders, 28x 18 pounders, and 18x 9 pounders. That's 668 crewmen just in the gun crews for a ship that was only supposed...

Bolt pitcher - This is a 6.5HP/kW lawn mower engine running a wide drive disk linked to a much smaller impulse wheel. The impulse wheel is rotating at about 300 mph. A gravity fed hopper feeds...

Re: [AtE] Black Powder vs Smokeless

The original Haber process was a benchtop system that produced 125mL of ammonia per hour, developed in 1909. You need a full industrial plant if you intend to fight WWI, but a couple of liters a day...

Re: [AtE] Wasteland vehicle improvised weaponry

Say again? I just put out some numbers. I think it's very feasible to armor up a vehicle that can handle the weight, like the honking big truck or a premium automobile from the early 20th century....

Re: [AtE] Wasteland vehicle improvised weaponry

F-350s are rated for nearly 10 tons gross vehicle weight and can tow another 6 tons at full load. Dropping a couple of tons of armor on it will cut into the cargo capacity but not affect the...

Re: [AtE] Wasteland vehicle improvised weaponry

Sloping armor plate increases the relative thickness, which is good, but also increases the area that you need to armor, which is bad.

Take the front grill of that F-350: it's normally 6.7' * 3.5'...

Re: [AtE] Wasteland vehicle improvised weaponry

A Ford F-350 Supercab Longbed is 21' long, 6.7' wide, and about 5.5' tall from the bottom of the cabin to the roof. The bed is 8' long, so the hood and cab take up 13' - call them 5.5' long and 7.5'...

Re: [AtE] Wasteland vehicle improvised weaponry

.308 does 7d damage, or less than 28 points. Decent steel armor is 70 DR/in, so 4/10ths of inch or 10mm should be more than sufficient. Steel armor at that thickness weighs roughly 16 lbs per square...

Re: [AtE] Wasteland vehicle improvised weaponry

You can use a small engine to spin a small wheel at very high RPM just above a second, freely rotating wheel. Then you can feed projectiles like bolts between the two wheels, and they get...

Re: Black powder Cannon Ballistics in the Age of Sail

You can estimate the air resistance if you try. It's a mostly spherical cannon shot, you can approximate the drag force as 1/2 * rho * A * C * v^2. rho is air density (~1.29 kg/m^3), C is roughly...

Also: It's an attack, it's an attack without a weapon, it's an unarmed attack.
