Re: Weather in a Dysonish sphere

The mass or otherwise of the sphere doesn't matter - if it's uniform there's zero gravitational force from the sphere inside it.

Does the central ring of fire have any mass, in which case things...

Re: Exotic Governmental/Legal Systems

This reminds me of the towns that get used for test-marketing, because their populations match the distribution of the target population. In the UK, this was Swindon (may still be, I don't know)....

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Code of Honor

She also travelled openly with a lover, so to some extent this may be her Status compensating for the reaction penalty of her CoH breaches.

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Code of Honor

Not necessarily part of a gentlewoman's CoH, though; that applies to every woman who isn't celibate, which in itself is probably a disad.

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Code of Honor

We can even split that down the middle.

"You may not legally own property" is part of the Social Stigma.

"If you are insulted, a male relative must act for you" is part of the Code of Honor....

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Code of Honor

Some of this is implicit in her Social Stigma (Second-Class Citizen), though. I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong, but let's make sure we're not double-dipping.

Re: Expert Tailoring, Fluting and Masterful Tailoring at TL8

I think you've got something similar to the shoe market. Mass-produced shoes are good enough for most people most of the time; which means that if you want a custom-made shoe, you're going to a...

The OGRE of the Gate:
"To every bot upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can bot die better
Than facing fearful...

Re: Subdermal Locator Beacons or Other Technological Anti-Flight Measures

Yes, the use case matters a lot. J. Random Criminal with a cellphone-based tracker doesn't throw away the cellphone, because if he does the police will come after him and he'll go to prison; the...

Re: Subdermal Locator Beacons or Other Technological Anti-Flight Measures

Current trackers tend to rely on the offender either carrying specialised hardware (a cell phone plus receiver electronics) or being in a particular place near the base station.

I think...

Re: [Basic] Disadvantage of the Week: Clueless

I certainly used to have a mild form of this, though probably not the full ten-point version; I've put effort into fixing it. I can think of one person who probably does have it, without the OPHs...

Re: Is TS optimistic or pessimistic?

Oh, yes. I was at a seminar on the Great Game in 1988 (GenCon), and Lester Smith (I think) said "look, guys, you're supposed to dislike the French" to general amazement - lots of gamers had assumed...

Re: [Cutting-Edge Armor Design] Real World SCA-legal Armour and Ballistics Armour

That should already be in his mindset; the armoured "narco-tanks" that the cartels use now tend to be one-of-a-kind constructions, perhaps with an overall design brief ("make it bulletproof but still...

Re: February 4, 2018: Where Do PDFs Come From?

Last time I had to use Windows, there were free "printer drivers" that would let you print to PDF from any program. (And once it's in PDF, it's easy to manipulate, strip out pages, combine files...

Re: Why isn't the web clogged with rogue AIs?

I think the trick may be that an individual xox may well not be a problem, but the ability of digital intelligences to spawn lots of xoxes in a very short time is a problem; in order to prevent...

Re: Exotic Governmental/Legal Systems

Actually, one of the few things they do seem to get used for is oil spills: collect the spill in booms, bring in a small boat with a big pump on it, then fill dracones with watery oil and get them...

Re: Exotic Governmental/Legal Systems

"Flexible barge" or more specifically "dracone barge" are the key phrases here. It's been tried occasionally, but mostly right now it seems to be lots of promises and investment opportunities.

Re: Exotic Governmental/Legal Systems

The specific distinction, which is still technically present in maritime law, is that jetsam (which may but need not be floating) is still the property of its original owner, while flotsam (which...

Re: Will the Space Colony children be the Startravelers?

This will certainly be cheaper than nanostasis, but with nanostasis you can take with you biosapients who are able to pay for their tickets. :) I suspect "live out your life in the perfect society"...

Re: Will the Space Colony children be the Startravelers?

If an interstellar trip is to happen at all, which is its own argument in which I'm not participating, then I think the arguments for an all-infomorph crew are compelling.

If I were living in TS...

Re: Will the Space Colony children be the Startravelers?

Given that this is the Transhuman Space forum rather than the general speculation about the future forum, no, I don't think I do.

Re: Will the Space Colony children be the Startravelers?

This is one of the many reasons why infomorphs make more sense for STL interstellar, at least as crew (you can nanostasis the organics if you feel any need to take them along): they are signing up...
