E.g. you could use the more action style/narrative solution from GURPS Action 2, where the distances are only roughly classified...

Gridless works well, as long as your players feel ok with some more abstract descriptions at times. Also don't hesitate to mix hex grid and gridless at times if it pleases you, e.g. using the grid...

Actually I always encourage my players to use 'point shifting' (skill points->attributes) to avoid that issue. In the game they can increase their skills (a little bit) immediately after a session...

as far as I remember from earlier days with the classic GURPS spell magic there was a range penalty for regular spells, something like -1 per yard.

Is it right that this is no longer true for...

With respect to the currently available material, I would choose Monster Hunters as next box, After-the-End would be also great, though.

Otherwise I would love to see a 4e re-make of the 3e...
