A Spy Hunter card game or a Spy Hunter Car Wars-style boardgame (the latter less complex than Car Wars) could be interesting.

A Spy Hunter-type scenario with special rules and vehicles should be included in a new edition of Car Wars to promote highway combat.

I've been putting together my own set of map tiles and counters from the PDFs on e23, and someone on the OGRE Kickstarter asked me to share some pictures, so I'm posting them here. These're the first prototypes - I messed up one edge of the map tile, and some of the counters are a bit uneven. Still getting the hang of the guillotine cutter with this thick stock.

The prototypes

The counters are made by laser-printing the Vehicle Guide 1 countersheets from the PDF onto A4 self-adhesive labels, then sticking those onto 2000-micron greyboard (the stuff used for stiffening hardback books, or backing notepads and the like, a little thicker than your standard die-cut counter) and cutting them out with a combination of the guillotine and a hobby knife. The map tile's much the same, but uses foamcore instead of the board - easier to cut, and the maps don't need the same density as the counters.

I'm considering sealing them with hobby spray varnish to make them more hard-wearing, but I haven't done that for these early attempts.

Opinions?

We used the second edition rules, and played a standard road section battle.
Had a blast. Haven't had this much fun playing a game (including RPGs) in a long, long time.

Can't wait until next week to play again. I think it's going to be a weekly/bi-weekly thing through to the Kickstarter next year.

It was dark, the air still. Sharlene's hands, encased in leather, turned the key. The engine turned over, rumbling like an angry hound. She never liked electric vehicles, they whined instead of rumbled, and that always struck her as sounding weak. Sure, you could buy an aftermarket part that would make your engine sound like that wonderful growl, but why pretend? The world was full of pretenders.

A crack of light appeared on the floor, slowly growing as the door ascended. It felt good to behind the wheel again. When the Anvildome shut down, she had hung up her keys, for good she thought. Shut down, she thought. That's a cute euphemism. The fact is, the Anvildome burned down, to the ground. The Anvildome was an arena owned by ex-dueler Al "The Anvil" Anderson. Al got this idea to make the duels more fair, and therefore he reckoned more exciting. He announced that for the 2052 dueling season, no altered cars would be allowed to compete. He said to put everyone on an even footing, they'd have to use stock models. Well, that didn't sit with Hank's adoring public. They accused him of everything from colluding with the auto companies to sell more stock models, to communism, to even being a part of the ARF. A riot ensued, followed by a fire, followed by the fire department sitting by taunting ol' Hank while they watched it burn.

Well, that was ten years ago, and it seemed to sour the whole dueling community. Sharlene didn't much care about dueling after that at all, and she put her car (the Gas Chamber) away and got on with her life.
Then she heard about a new arena being built, right on the bones of the old Anvildome. The new owners even went so far as to get public opinion on what dueling meant to them. Seemed like a friendly thing to do, plus it was probably good fire insurance. Either way, it seemed like dueling was on the upswing again, and even though she was out of practice, Sharlene "the ICEwoman" McCormick was itching to get back into the swing of things.

Even if she did have to drive 23 straight hours to get there.

I've played a lot of the game but never managed a league. The only solid part right now is hosting it on Sunday and calling it 'Sunday Drivers'

I read Jeffr0's blog about some of the worst parts of CW 5e, and I think one of the top problems with the 3 phase move is actually part of the 5 phase as well -

Don't you hate it when an opponent can swoop into Point Blank Range, get their shot, and move out again before you can shoot them?!

If you were behind the wheel, a car approaching you rapidly - wouldn't you hold your fire until the best possible moment?

Or a car with a heavily damaged side is executing a complex maneuver in your sights, but you can't shoot them in the weak spot because it just isn't your turn to pull the trigger?

I'm considering trying out a house rule where anyone can fire at any time, but only once in a 1-second turn...

Has anyone tried this already? I'd love some feedback about what stands out to you that might make this a particularly bad idea gameplay-wise... or if it sounds fun to ya -

hello to all you Car Wars enthusiasts.

I will be running my Car Wars Tournament at Dragonflight again this year.
Dragonflight is in Bellevue Aug 10 - 12
http://www.dragonflight.org/

I run 2.5 rules in a 3X format on a changeable component track. We have a lot of player visuals and aids that make the game run smooth, and I get new players up to speed within two rounds of play.

This will be the third year I have run this tournament, and each year we get both new and old school players. It is a blast!

So if you are in the area or planning to attend, come by and say hi, and take a look. If you are attending the con and want to play, I may suggest signing up on line early as we only have 18 spots available.

Take car and Drive Offensively
